Taiwan stocks closed up 0.28 percent on Friday, with LCD makers among the biggest gainers, advancing 0.96 percent, boosted by AU Optronics' limit-up finish after its president said he sees room to increase prices in some panel segments due to a supply shortage. The main TAIEX index rose 22.04 points to 7,959.34, after opening up 0.43 percent.
Banking shares climbed 0.7 percent. The financial regulator said it is considering varying the limits on stakes Chinese banks can hold in local ones. Electronics shares rose 0.39 percent, with HTC Corp gaining 0.16 percent ahead of its showcasing of new models at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress on Sunday. The Taiwan dollar was up by T$0.041 to trade at T$29.555. Foreign investors were net sellers on Thursday, offloading T$5.5 billion.
