Re-promulgation of Peco: CPLC urges government to take remedial measures

Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) on Saturday urged the federal government to take remedial measure to re-promulgate the Prevention of Electronic Crime Ordinance (Peco), which lapsed in 2007.
In a letter sent to the ministry of law and justice and parliamentary affairs, the CPLC chief Ahmed Chinoy informed the authority that since the lapse of PECO, the country has become a safe haven for cyber criminals as the Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) are presently unable to take legal action against any cyber crime.
The letter was sent in response to the inability of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to take legal action against the said crime. The letter said the cyber criminals used to deceive citizens by declaring them prize winner and asked them to pay Rs 10000 for transferring the winning amount in their account through cheques or to send the same at their door step.
It further said the callers took this money from the citizens through easy paisa transfer or by easy load in mobile. Following the complaints in this regard, Chief CPLC Sindh referred these complaints to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for taking necessary action against the culprits.
