The government is contemplating a month-long closure of CNG stations in Sindh during January, said Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain, here on Saturday. "The decision is not yet final and the proposal is still being deliberated upon," the Minister told journalists following a ceremony organised by Dr Sir Ziauddin Ahmad Memorial Society to celebrate "Ziauddin Day".
Dr Asim said the government was compelled to make tough decisions due to unrealistic policies adopted by the previous government. "Acute shortage of natural gas and the energy crisis in the country is exposed to leave little options but to be pragmatic," he said.
The minister said mushroom growth of CNG pump stations and the possible pilferage by certain unscrupulous owners of these stations had also aggravated the situation. Dr Asim reiterated that the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources was looking into all aspects that may help alleviate possible difficulties to be faced by the people. The Minister in reply to a question said there would be no closure of natural gas for domestic users nor would there be any "prolonged" closure for the industries.
