As many as 578 more yellow cabs have been distributed among jobless persons under Punjab Chief Minister's Youth Employment Scheme, which still continues across Punjab. Under the scheme, 146 cabs in Lahore, 275 in Rawalpindi and 157 in Multan have been distributed so far.
The PML-N led Punjab government had allocated an amount of Rs 4.5 billion in the budget 2011-12 for Yellow Cab Scheme (YCS) under which 20,000 vehicles would be distributed. Around 40 percent quota was allocated for Southern Punjab compared to its 31 percent population.
Under the scheme, any person below 35 years of age can apply for 800 cc vehicles through the Bank of Punjab on interest free terms and conditions. The candidates must have an intermediate certificate and a valid driving license. Those who have been selected to avail this scheme are being charged a service charge of one percent. The selected candidates are required to pay 20 percent of the price as a down payment. The remaining amount would be financed by the Punjab government through a Bank of Punjab interest free loan. The candidates would pay back in instalment.
PML-N leader Mohammad Pervaiz Malik said that Yellow Cab Scheme was a revolutionary step of the Punjab government, which was not only helping in eliminating poverty but also promoting local industry as well as providing better transport facilities to the masses.
To a query, he said transparency in the disbursement of cabs had been ensured, as candidates were selected through balloting at all divisional headquarters. Under the Yellow Cab Scheme, he said besides provision of job opportunities to the youth, reliable and best transport facilities would also be available to the masses.
Keeping in view the interest of the people in Bolan cabs, quota of Bolan vehicles has been enhanced from 20 percent to 40 percent whereas 60 percent vehicles would be of Mehran, he added. According to him, transparency is the hallmark of the Punjab government and all matters of Yellow Cab Scheme are being completed in a most transparent manner.
