Sindh Environment department could not table the new drafts of environmental laws in Sindh assembly despite passage of more than six months, Business Recorder learnt on Wednesday. These laws had been made by the experts of Environment department after the devolution of Federal Ministry of Environment, sources said.
The Federal Ministry of Environment along with two more ministries, including women development and sports had been transferred to provinces about six months ago. Earlier, the Environment departments of all provinces including Sindh were running under the umbrella of Federal Ministry of Environment and they all were following the Environmental Protection Act 1997.
After the devolution, Sindh and other provinces had made legislation regarding various environment-related issues but it could not be tabled in provincial assembly, sources said. According to sources, there was no any federal environment ministry's institute in Sindh, which was handed over to provincial department.
Only two federal projects, running in the province, including Environmental Monitoring system and NEIMS which was handed over to Sindh government, sources added. In this connection, Secretary Environment Mir Hussain Ali confirmed this while talking to Business Recorder here at his office. He said that the committee under the Director General Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) had completed all works regarding the legislation.
