Right of franchise to overseas Pakistanis: Supreme Court directs AG to submit concise statement

The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday directed Attorney General for Pakistan Maulvi Anwarul Haq to seek instructions from federation and submit concise statement in a petition moved by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief, Imran Khan, relating to right of votes to overseas Pakistanis.
A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing identical constitutional petitions filed by PTI Chief and others, making Ministry of Law, Ministry of overseas Pakistanis, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Elections Commission of Pakistan as respondents.
It was prayed that respondents may kindly be directed to make appropriate measures for making it possible for the Overseas Pakistanis to cast their vote in Pakistani consulates and embassies like many other developed/developing countries do so.
The petition was filed through Mian Abdul Rauf advocate, contending that as per mandate of the Constitution of Pakistan, the respondents were required to prepare and update electoral rolls by devising provisions for making it possible for overseas Pakistanis to cast their votes in the forthcoming elections. The AGP sought time to take instruction from all the ministries and ECP upon which the Chief Justice adjourned the hearing for two weeks.
