UK wheat exports edged up in October, although continuing to run significantly below last season's levels, customs data showed on Tuesday. Shipments during October totalled 291,511 tonnes, up from the prior month's 277,315 tonnes. Cumulative exports for the 2011/12 season, which started on July 1, totalled 850,531 tonnes, down from 1.21 million tonnes in the same period a year earlier.
UK wheat shipments were particularly strong in the early part of last season, boosted by a Russian export ban and tight global supplies, and this year's exports were running well ahead of the 2009/10 four-month total of 584,880 tonnes. The Netherlands was the largest customer taking 118,401 tonnes in October for a season-to-date total of 370,925 tonnes, up from 334,990 tonnes in the first four months of the 2010/11 marketing year.
UK rapeseed exports slowed in October to 16,437 tonnes, down from 41,128 tonnes in September. Cumulative exports at 226,817 tonnes remained, however, more than double the prior season's four-month total of 102,982 tonnes. Rapeseed exports are expected to rise sharply this season following a record harvest.
