Pakistan envoys summoned to Islamabad

Published Updated

The government summoned on Monday most of Pakistan ambassadors stationed in various parts of the world to Islamabad with a view to revamping its foreign policy in the aftermath of the recent Nato attacks on Pakistan army posts in Mohmand Agency.
According to sources, the Foreign Office has called envoys particularly those stationed in Western countries, the Middle East and Central Asia to Islamabad where a meeting will be held to revisit the contours of foreign policy. Sources said that a somewhat radical change in the country's foreign policy is expected after Pakistan examines the complexities of situation and rethinks its foreign policy imperatives.
They said that the meeting with the ambassadors would be held after the joint session of the parliament likely to be held on December 12. The country's foreign policy and suggestions for reforms would be discussed in the meeting, sources said, adding that alliance in war on terror and future line of action regarding aggression from western borders would be the top agenda item of the meeting.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has already directed the Foreign Office to review foreign policy of the country in line with the May 14 resolution passed by the joint session of the parliament. The parliament passed unanimous resolutions in October 2008 and May 2011 demanding, inter alia, an immediate halt to US drone attacks. The major opposition political parties have been pressing the government to implement these resolutions. Following the United States' unilateral military operation inside Pakistan territory on May 2, 2011, the parliament threatened to withdraw the transit facility enjoyed by Nato forces if US drone attacks in the country's tribal areas continued.
