Khosa says he can't investigate memogate

Published Updated

Former Director-General Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Tariq Khosa has expressed his inability to perform as head of the Supreme Court constituted one-man Judicial Commission to investigate the Memogate. A nine-member special bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
While hearing identical constitutional petitions, filed by Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leaders Nawaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Asif, President Watan Party Barrister Zafarullah, Tariq Asad, senior advocate, and others had nominated the former DG FIA to head the Memogate Commission and directed him to submit a report within three weeks.
The Chief Justice had directed the Registrar on Thursday to ask Tariq Khosa whether he agrees to perform the assigned national duty, adding that in case Khosa declines to act as the Commission, he may inform the Registrar who shall place the matter in the Chambers for passing of an appropriate order for taking up the matter either in the Court or holding proceedings in the Chambers. Well placed sources disclosed that Khosa informed the Registrar Supreme Court on Saturday that he was not able to head the Commission.
Khosa, who has also served as Secretary Anti-Narcotics Force and Inspector General of Balochistan, is brother of SC judge Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa and Punjab Chief Secretary Nasir Khosa. It is worth mentioning that at a press conference the same day when the court formed the Commission former federal Law Minister Babar Awan questioned the integrity of Khosa. According to Awan, Khosa is very close to Nawaz Sharif and his party. It is also pertinent to mention here that those who have worked with Khosa term him a man of principles and integrity.
