An Indian lawmaker arrested in connection with the country's biggest corruption scandal was granted bail by a court in New Delhi on Monday. K. Kanimozhi has been charged with accepting bribes in the 2008 sale of telecommunications spectrum licences which auditors said cost the government about 39 billion dollars.
Kanimozhi, of the Dravida Munnetra Kazagham, a key coalition partner of the ruling United Progressive Alliance, was taken into custody on May 20. The Delhi High Court also granted bail to four other defendants. Kanimozhi's party colleague, former telecoms minister Andimuthu Raja, is the main suspect in the alleged sale of licences at giveway prices without following proper bidding procedures. Federal investigators alleged that kickbacks in the scandal were traced to a television company owned by Kanimozhi.
