The government of Punjab will spend Rs 2.5 billion in livestock sector during current fiscal year in order to enhance meat and milk production, official sources told APP here on Saturday. The projects in this vital sector of economy will create job opportunities to hundreds of thousands of jobless youth in rural areas, the sources added.
The government, for the first time in the history of Punjab has exported meat to Malaysia. Earlier, India was completely capturing this meat market, the sources said and added that a modern meat processing plant was being set up with the co-operation of Iran, which will enable the province to export huge quantity of meat.
They said, the government has also established Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Board for promotion of livestock. The Board through model livestock farms will impart training to farmers so that they could take care of their cattle properly and generate money for their families, the sources added. A livestock university would also be set up in Bahawalpur at a cost of Rs 4.4 million, they said.
