The US embassy has been playing a constructive role towards restoring peace in Karachi. In an email to Business Recorder, the US Embassy stated, "we continue to openly engage with members of various political parties on matters of mutual concern, including the violence in Karachi."
This is for the first time that the US Embassy has officially confirmed its mediatory role in resolving Karachi issue whereas the State Department has also termed the situation in the Pakistan's economic hub a serious issue for Internal Security Services of Pakistan to fight extremism in Pakistan, saying the US was obviously watching the situation.
In a related development, MQM's former Senator and member of the party's co-ordination committee Nasreen Jalil has written letters to the embassies of the US, the UK and China, informing them about the situation in Karachi and accusing the PPP of trying to "push them to the corner". While on the other hand, the PPP's Sindh Minister for Local Government Agha Siraj Durrani has reportedly visited the US Consulate in Karachi where he conveyed to the US officials his party's approach to the situation in Karachi.
"The US Embassy has not received the letter (sent by Mrs Jalil), but our Consulate in Karachi received it," confirmed Siobhan Oat-Judge, US Embassy spokesperson, adding that the US Embassy hopes for a peaceful resolution to the situation in Karachi. Reports said that the US Consulate and British deputy high commission in Karachi are actively engaged in talks with politicians regarding Karachi issue.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a British High Commission official in Islamabad told Business Recorder that British authorities were in contact with Pakistani politicians with regard to the violence in Karachi and were trying to assist efforts for the restoration of peace in this regard. However, the Commission's spokesman refused to offer any comment on the matter.
