A delegation of National Assembly standing committee on human rights headed by Riaz Fatyana, chairman, visited central jail, Kot Lakhpat, Lahore on Saturday. Riaz Fatyana took personal interest in the improvement of the jail environment. He directed the I.G. Prisons to take concrete measures to facilitate the visitors and the inmates.
Fatyana along with the members of the committee prepared recommendations to be presented before the National Assembly for overhauling the jails across Pakistan. The recommendations are as under: Free legal aid should be provided to the needy prisoners; free of cost jail kit at the time of entry to a prisoner in jail should be provided. Booklet, computerised medical card for the inmates along with history ticket should be provided. Filtration plant at jail premises must be installed. Proper arrangement must be made for regular school education for juvenile prisoners. Establishing of female ward in the jail hospital is the need of the hour. Public Calls Offices (PCO) and utility store in the jail should be established. For provision of speedy justice for all the prisoners, especial armament should be made.
While talking to media on the occasion Fatyana asked the administration and judiciary to take serious notice of the pending criminal cases. He also stressed the importance of strengthening the system of payroll across Pakistan to overcome the over crowding issues faced by the jails. Fatyana chairman of the standing committee urged the concerned quarters to raise the daily wages of the prisoners from Rs 42 to at least 100 rupees. He also asked the jail officials to take effective steps to minimise the incidence corruption prevailing in the jails.
