Monsoon deluge kills 28 in Sindh

Devastating rains killed at least 28 people overnight, destroying crops and houses in the flood-prone Sindh, a government official said Friday. "At least 21 people died, most of them because of falling roofs during rains on Thursday night," said Sajjad Haider Shah, an official at the disaster management authority.
Fifteen of the deaths occurred in the Mirpurkhas district, which was worst-affected, he told AFP. "The rains have also destroyed crops and forced hundreds of people to leave their homes," said Shah. Dozens of villages also came under the floodwater and cultivated crops on thousands of acres of land have been destroyed. At least six persons were killed and eight others injured in Bhan Singhabad when the roof of a house collapsed.
According to sources, a man was drowned in a drain near Umer Kot. Two girls died and five women were injured after the roof of their house collapsed. A child, Haseeb and his mother were killed in another incident of roof collapse in Tando Jam. In Jhuddo Town, Mohammad Maganhar, Kheti and Jamni were killed in a similar incident. Many areas of Hyderabad including Sabzi Mandi, Railway Colony, Latifabad No 2 and 6 are also affected by heavy rainfall The meteorological office forecast more rain this week.
