All over the world, counterfeiting is being done in the areas of consumer products, cosmetics, electronics, lubricants, auto spares, computer accessories and pharmaceuticals etc. But due to the vigilance and strict laws the magnitude of this problem is not that big as compared to the third world, especially Pakistan.
According to the available statistics over 30% of all fragrances, toiletries, cosmetics, and drugs are either counterfeited or spurious. Not only this problem is seriously damaging the human health but also shaking the confidence of consumers and putting up a question mark on mega brands and Top National / Multinational companies. The companies are loosing theirs sales and the government is loosing the revenue in the shape of taxes and duties.
Based on a survey carried out by MIAP, found that the Cosmetics Industry topped counterfeiting activities among the 12 types of Industries that are vulnerable forgery.
In the third world countries, weak laws, small penalties and absence of proper implementation are aggravating this problem, and the counterfeiters are using every option that they have from product imitation and tampering to refilling used bottles and containers. Therefore the responsibility lies on the shoulders of Government to make stringent laws and also its strict implementation in order to stop counterfeiters from manufacturing and distributing sub standard and counterfeited products.
Working in Pakistan with the above highlighted factors, the responsibility also lies with Multinationals and National companies to adopt new technologies as used by the Government for securing Bank Notes like Optically Variable Technology (OVI) and other Covert and Overt securities for protection of their brands in order to provide original products to their consumers.
