Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is all set to elect Mian Nawaz Sharif as party's president unopposed, whereas Sartaj Aziz secretary-general, Pervez Rashid secretary-information, besides other central office-bearers in the central working committee meeting being held here today (Wednesday).
Party's sources said that Makhadoom Javed Hashmi would be elected unopposed as senior vice president, Ahsan Iqbal as additional secretary general while Raja Zafarul Haq would remain as party chairman. The election being held after an interval of around two years is being termed a formality as the party insiders said that all the key office-bearers would be elected unopposed and the name of the candidates would be announced at Central Organising Committee (COC) meeting to be chaired by Mian Nawaz Sharif to be endorsed by the general council members.
Though, the PML-N has constituted, a seven-member election commission comprising members from four provinces, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan to monitor the election process of the central office-bearers, sources said that all these would be elected unopposed by evolving consensus.
The election commission is headed by Iqbal Zafar Jhagra while its other members included M. Hamza, Syed Manoon Hussain, Nawabzada Changez Khan Marri, Pir Sabir Shah, Shah Ghulam Qadir and Haji Akbar. PML-N's MNA Anusha Rehman while addressing a news conference refused to comment on the elections of the central office-bearers, however, added that over 2,500 general councillors would evolve consensus to elect the central office-bearers. She said that PML-N has elected presidents and general secretaries in 134 districts by evolving consensus.
She said that elections process of president and general secretaries of four districts including Mandi Bahawuddin, Federal Capital Islamabad, Rahim Yar Khan and Lahore were pending and these would be announced soon after evolving consensus. At district level, Anusha said that a strict criterion was observed and the standing of presidents and general secretaries were made mandatory for continuous 10 years service to the party.
The PML-N organisational structure was dissolved on September 8, 2009, and the COC was constituted, which elected Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as its chairman. Anusha further said that after election of the central office-bearers, the elections of provincial office-bearers would also be held soon. She said that this time efforts have been made to shift the party's leadership at provincial, district and tehsil level to real party workers. She said that the around 2,400,000 membership forms have been dispatched across the country during the organisation campaign of the party.
