A Lahore High Court election tribunal here on Monday reserved its verdict in an election petition seeking disqualification of PPP MNA and former state minister Tariq Anees. Daniyal Aziz of PML-Q filed the petition after he had lost his general election in 2008 against Anees from NA-116.
Aziz challenged the victory of Anees and accused him of poll rigging. He alleged that the respondent with the help of polling staff managed bogus votes in his favour.
Petitioner alleged that on the day of polling there was lot of disturbance at more than 30 polling stations. Even one of his supporters was murdered and he also suffered injuries. He further alleged that the ballot boxes from 30 polling stations were forcibly removed by the respondent.
The petitioner contended that he had moved an application to district returning officer, Narowal about the whole episode who recommended the election commission to hold an inquiry into the allegations by the petitioner before issuing notification of returned candidate.
Daniyal said the election commission without considering his application and recommendation of returning officer announced the result and declared Anees as winner. Tariq Anees had secured 45097 while Daniyal Aziz got 37138 votes.
He prayed that the result announced by the election commission be set aside and the commission be directed to issue notification of returned candidate in his favour.
