The third Independence Day Cup Open Golf Tournament 2011 concluded at Defence Authority Country & Golf Club here on Sunday with Shabbir Iqbal of Islamabad Golf Club (IGC) winning the coveted trophy of the high profile DHA tournament.
The performance of Pakistan's No 1 golfer Shabbir Iqbal was spectacular who won the championship and a prize money of Rs 130,986 with a score of (-11). Defending champion Muhammad Munir of IGC trailed behind to third position while rising star Adil Jehangir of LGYM finished runners up of the tournament with a score of (-9).
In senior professionals, Manzoor Ahmed of LGYM with score at par was first while Akbar Ali of LGYM with score of +2 bagged the second position. In amateurs, (H/C 12 below) winner gross was M. Waseem Rana of DHA with 224 gross score while winner net was Zohaib Asif of DHA with a score of 212.
In the ladies event, winner net was Dr Sarwat Imran of DHA with 53 score while winner gross was the shinning star Shahida Ismail of KGC with score of 45.
In juniors, (under 16) Mubariz Ahmed of KGC with 78 score was winner gross while Saud Irfan of DHA with 69 score was winner net. In masters, Ibrahim Sohail of DHA with 30 score was winner net and Mustafa Ghani of DHA with 29 score bagged the winner gross title.
The tournament was held from 14 to 17 July 2011 at DHA Golf Club in which 400 spirited golfers of different ages featured in various categories including country's top 100 professionals.
An impressive prize distribution ceremony was held at DHA Golf Club in which Commander 5 Corps Lieutenant General Zahirul Islam, himself a keen golfer, was the chief guest. The Corps Commander appreciated Defence Authority Country & Golf Club for promoting golfing activity in the country and for organising a spectacular golf tournament at a mega level, which has become part of Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) annual calendar event.
He said that it was heartening that golfers from all over Pakistan and players of all ages and categories participated in the tournament with great zeal and enthusiasm. He added that golfing was a lively and fascinating activity that called for application of mind, technique and demonstration of sportsman spirit reflecting healthy and positive trends in society.-PR
