Iran's official news agency says the country's Revolutionary Guard has killed five Kurdish rebels in a raid that destroyed one of the group's headquarters in north-western Iran. IRNA`says the operation began Saturday night and ended early Sunday morning along the Iraqi border near the largely Kurdish town of Sardasht.
The news agency says one Iranian soldier was killed in the clashes and buried in Sardasht on Sunday. The deadly clashes come nearly a week after an Iranian military official threatened to attack the group's bases in Iraq.
The group is known as PEJAK, which stands in Kurdish for the Party of Free Lkfe of Kurdistan. Ét has been involved!in sporadic clashes with Iranian forces in recent years and says it is fighting for greater rights.
