Managing Director Karachi Water & Sewerage Board, Misbahuddin Farid has warned acute shortage of water in the city during the forthcoming holy month of Ramazan if KESC did not set up special water supply cell for KWSB installations. He was addressing a hurriedly called press conference at the head-office of KWSB on Saturday.
Farid said the city is already facing shortage of 16 to 20 crore gallons of water due to prolonged spells of power failure at the water pumping stations. He revealed that at some of these stations, they faced power breakdown as long as 55 hours while the KESC officials did not respond to contacts and even their offices were found closed. This situation has continued since last four months and, as a result, the city suffered shortage of 4018mgd water during the period.
He further said that short supply of water is increasing day by day due to unavailability of electricity at pumping stations as the operation of more than 160 stations and 22 sewerage-pumping stations require power supply from KESC. He warned that the situation will get worsen in the coming days if KESC did not pay heed to his appeal for uninterrupted electricity supply to the pumping stations.
MD KWSB said they had informed the government before and now telling the public through media that the indifferent attitude of KESC officials is responsible for this entire situation. He said water and sewerage board has the responsibility of providing water to more than 20million people of the city and could not fulfil its duties without co-operation from the KESC. He also expressed apprehension that acute shortage of water in city could lead to serious crisis in the city and KESC administration will be held responsible for any such condition. Replying to a query, he said that water crisis in city is not due to shortage of water but prolonged power breakdown at KWSB pumping station is the reason for this short supply of water.
