Karachi University fails to set up watertight security system

The administration of Karachi University has failed to arrange a watertight security system even after the terrorist attack in the premises of varsity in which more than six students sustained injuries, sources told Business Recorder. Sources claimed that university may face more terrorist acts of such type as many outlawed groups are active in varsity under the guise of students.
Sources told Business Recorder, Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui had approved a special grant from the finance section for the development of strong monitoring system to keep a vigil on the movement of suspected persons. "The university's management has taken the services of ex-serviceman for the establishment of central control room and installation of CCTV cameras, but the appointed official left the project at the midway," they added.
They said that the then Governor Sindh and Chancellor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan had issued directives to the vice chancellors of all public and private sector universities for the development of foolproof security system. However, the management has failed to comply with the directives of superior authorities, which not only exposed the laziness, but also its behaviour towards chancellor secretariat, they added.
"At present there is no surveillance system in the varsity and there is no restriction for the entrance into the premises of the province highly dependable public sector educational institution, which imposes threats of life to both students and teaching faculty, they said, adding that the university has failed to construct boundary wall and banned entrance of unofficial person through prohibited backdoors."
They said the university had appointed ex-serviceman as Chief Security Officer (CSO) to establish a vigilance centre and to bring improvement in existing security arrangements for securing 23,000 students and 7,000 of its employees. The hired CSO resigned from his position due to growing pressure from university's employees and refusal of his illegal demands, the sources added.
Sources inside university disclosed that the varsity is facing shortage of security guards to safeguard the premises of the educational institution from anti-state elements due to which it has failed to develop a security system. He said that the university has announced vacancies for security guards, but the process is yet to be completed due to some unknown reasons.
