ART FACTS: Calligraphy with veneration

Calligraphic art creates an invisible link to the spiritual world. Calligraphy represents the first step toward learning of history of a religion and a culture and Nasim Nasho Fauz through his brilliant use of colours and a superb balance between design and form, creates an immediate impact.
He has carefully painted the Ayats in radiant colours which gives the impression of light, especially the names of Allah. The exhibition calligraphic artworks by Nasim Nasho Fauz at Sadequain Gallery, Frere Hall, Karachi was arranged by City Owners Welfare Association (COWA). The snow was a great chemistry of spirit and virtually recited ninety-nine attributes of Allah written in Kufi script by the artist.
A national excellence award 1999 winner with the late Ashfaq Ahmed, Nasim Nasho Fauz thinks that Quranic calligraphy is the gateway to mysticism. Kufic script had a profound effect on all Islamic calligraphies. And Nasim Nasho has chosen the same script and has been learning Kufi script of calligraphy for the last two years, which makes him a spiritually contented person. His artworks have a strong aesthetic appeal. Viewers learn more beyond the obvious surface beauty to discover the rich historical and cultural traditions from which this art has emerged.
No significant changes appeared in the original forms of this handwriting. The tendency of the letters towards left and right sides, together with some other invented differences exerted in the chosen letters, characterizes the style of writing. Thus, he adopted various ways of inscribing letters in Kufic script. He makes full use of angular, square and short horizontal strokes and long verticals and bold compact circles to beautify his artworks. The composition is based on the intertwining of geometric shapes - including circles, squares, and triangles - with the words. The flow of the words blends beautifully in a unique way with the movement of the stressed and dense vertical letters. He uses virtually a free hand in the conception and execution of the Kufi script. The script is considerably wider than it is high.
With its glorious construction, Kufi could be adapted to any space and material. Keeping that in mind he extends horizontal lines, which gives it a certain dynamic momentum. The colours are also chosen wisely to match the background surfaces. The Kufi script has specific proportional measurements, along with pronounced angularity and squareness and Nasim Nasho uses it with ease. Paying attention to the elegance and artistic issues he has enriched his handwritings.
While talking to me Mazhar Khan, Chairman COWA, Tariq Naseer, General Secretary, COWA and Atif Ali, Finance Secretary, COWA said that COWA is giving an opportunity to those artists who are unable to exhibit their works in private galleries. Every week, various artists' artworks are put on display at the Sadequain Gallery, Frere Hall, Karachi, to promote works of artists young or senior.
