Civil Hospital Jamshoro: 'ownership to be transferred to LUHMS management'

Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad who is also the chancellor of the varsities in Sindh has announced that the ownership of Civil Hospital, Jamshoro will be transferred to the management of Liaquat University of Health & Medical Science (LUHMS). The cardiac unit of Civil Hospital, also, would be upgraded to the level of institute to ensure better medical facilities, especially to the people of rural areas.
This he announced while addressing the inaugural ceremony of 'LUMHS Dental Symposium 2011 at Latif Hall Administration Block, LUMHS Jamshoro on Saturday. Referring to the recommendations made by Vice Chancellor LUMHS in his welcome address, Ebad said a high powered committee comprising Sindh Minister for Health, Dr Sagheer Ahmed and Sindh Minister for Finance, Syed Murad Ali Shah has been constituted to revise and raise perks and salaries of doctors.
Later, talking to media, Sindh Governor said that he has discussed the issue of devolution of Higher Education Commission (HEC) with President, Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and presented recommendations prepared by vice chancellors, senior professors, academicians and intellectuals that want continuation of HEC.
Responding to the question about extension in the services or nomination of vice chancellors, Ebad said that under a transparent procedure, advertisements are being floated in the newspapers by high powered committee for inviting applications from eligible candidates, in which retired Vice Chancellors can also contest. About the pay scale of young doctors, he informed that a committee has been formed to review their demands.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sagheer Ahmed congratulated the management of LUHMS for getting the status of top most public sector medical varsity of the country, saying this shows the dedication and hard work of the management. Vice-Chancellor LUMHS, Dr Noshad A. Shaikh said that his varsity has no hospital and unfortunately, attached hospital is in an unsatisfactory state. He said that lack of infrastructure and modern facilities makes it extremely difficult for them to train young doctors.
In such a situation, this varsity should have its own hospital. He demanded handing over of the existing Liaquat University Hospital (Civil Hospital) Jamshoro along-with its staff and the existing budget to the management of the varsity. He also sought raising stipend of house officers and post-graduates to bring these at par with Punjab officers.
Later, Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad visited Mehran University of Engineering & Technology where he laid foundation stone of the administration block being constructed at an estimated cost of rupees 130.337 million. He also inaugurated Software Engineering Department and foreign faculty hostel schemes completed by the varsity.
