Australian dollar climbs

Published Updated

The Australian dollar climbed to a fresh 2.5-year high against the yen on Monday as investors piled into carry trades, while sitting inches away from a fresh peak on its US counterpart. The Aussie climbed as high as 90.04 yen, before steadying around 89.60 with support seen at 89.15. It has gained 19 percent since mid-March and no less than 58 percent since the dark days of the global financial crisis in 2008.
The kiwi also maintained its strength against the yen, sitting at 66.38, within sight of last week's 11-month high of 66.72. The New Zealand dollar also pushed up to $0.7832, after briefly. The Aussie inched higher on the kiwi to be at NZ$1.3483, well below a 20-year high of $1.3794 struck early March.
