At least two persons were injured when two unidentified persons on a motorcycle hurled a grenade at the Municipal Office, Chakiwara in Lyari town on Saturday morning. According to details, two unknown pillion riders threw hand grenade at Lyari Town office at around 10 AM, leaving two persons namely Sundeep son of Chand and Gul Muhammad, 45, son of Taj Wali injured.
Following the blast, the investigation teams, bomb disposal squad (BDS), Lyari and City Towns police and rescuers of various welfare organisations rushed to the spot. Both injured were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) for treatment. The investigation teams and BDS experts collected bomb samples from the crime scene to ascertain the modus operandi and nature of the blast. They also recorded the statements of eye-witnesses to draw the sketches of the culprits.
SHO Napier police station Nawaz Gondal while talking to this scribe informed that two unknown miscreants, who came on a motorbike, threw a hand grenade at Lyari Town office, which left two persons injured. Although the motive behind this attack was yet to be ascertained, SHO Nawaz was of the view that this exercise might be done just to create panic in the area. Moreover, he said the case was registered and further investigation in this regard was underway.
Meanwhile, the Lyari Town Administrator Muhammad Raeesy confirmed that both victims were employed as menial workers at Lyari Town office and added that they were striving to acquire official grant for their private medical treatment.
Sources in BDS said the Russian made hand grenade, having 65 grams of high explosive material, was used by the culprits. They said the victims had received severe fractures as this bomb, which was capable to hit the object in the range of 20 metres, threw at open place.
It is pertinent to mention that this was fifth in the series of hand grenade attacks during last 40 days. The first hand grenade was thrown at the real estate of Habib Baloch's brother on March 19, 2011. Thereafter, two offices of one of the major political party of Sindh and the largest CDs market 'Rainbow Centre' were come under these attacks.
