The Lahore High Court here Monday directed CCPO Aslam Tareen to appear before the court on April 11 in a petition of two cafes for stopping them from offering Shisha. Earlier, Model Town SP appeared before the court and said Shisha cafes were hub of narcotics and immoral activities. He said police had received many complaints against these cafes.
After hearing the SP, the court summoned CCPO on next date of hearing. The petitioners Danial Arif and Muhammad Arif Saleem submitted that they were engaged in the business of restaurants and cafes throughout the province and also serving Shisha (Pipe) throughout Lahore.
Their counsel submitted that on March 17, SHO Liberty Market, forcibly entered Daniyal's Sheikhoo's Café and Muhammad Arif Saleem's Café Life, and stopped them from serving Shisha. When they asked them for any notification or letter from the government, they informed that they were conducting the raid under the directions of the CCPO who had through his various wireless messages conveyed to all the concerned officers, to conduct such raids over all Cafes in Lahore serving Shishas.
They also confiscated two Shishas from Sheikhoo's Café and four from Café Life. The counsel said that the acts of the police authorities are illegal, without legal authority and is liable to set aside. He said they are committing these acts to blackmail them to close their legitimate business of cafes. He said there was no criminal activity on the part of the petitioners. He said his clients are well-reputed businessmen of the area and under no circumstances whatsoever are liable to any criminal action as they are working completely in consonance of all the laws, rules and regulations.
