The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has assigned special targets of customs duty to the Anti Smuggling Organisation in each Model Customs Collectorate (MCC) to control illicit trade of cars and banned items with the help of law enforcement agencies.
Sources told Business Recorder here on Tuesday that the issue of smuggling was discussed during the last ''collectors of customs conference'' held under chairmanship of Chief Collector of Customs North. The law enforcement agencies have assured the FBR of co-operation in anti-smuggling activities. The customs authorities wanted to take strict administrative and enforcement measures with focus on anti-smuggling operations to generate additional revenue in the remaining months of current fiscal year.
According to sources, special targets were assigned to the Anti Smuggling Organisation operating in each regional Collectorate to curb smuggling of vehicles and contraband goods. It was pointed out that accelerating the anti smuggling activities will help in surpassing the overall revenue targets by timely disposal of confiscated vehicles/goods.
It was informed that police and other law enforcement agencies of both Punjab and KPK provinces have agreed to extend co-operation and support in anti-smuggling operations. The Chief Collector of Customs has directed all the collectors of customs to re-organise the ASO by posting best professional staff and the collectors present in the meeting agreed to achieve the target in respect of anti-smuggling activities by June 30.
The overall position of customs duty revealed that the FBR has collected Rs 118.132 billion during July-March 26 (2010-2011) against Rs 105.646 billion in the corresponding period of last fiscal, reflecting an increase of 11.8 percent. The gross collection of customs duty was Rs 124.726 billion during this period which stood at Rs 118.132 billion after payment of rebate/duty drawback of Rs 6.594 billion.
