On behalf of Pakistan Bangladesh Friendship Forum and on my own behalf I offer my heartiest and warmest felicitations to the people and Government of Bangladesh on the occasion of 40th Anniversary of National and Independence Day of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh which was once a part of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan became an independent State in 1971. The people of Bangladesh were in the forefront in the struggle against the Foreign Rulers and for creation of a separate homeland for the Muslims of undivided India. Bangladesh after its independence played a lead role in the establishment of South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC) which promoted friendly relations and economic co-operations among the countries of the region.
The people of Pakistan and Bangladesh share common bonds of religion, culture, social values and a heritage for which they struggle jointly in the past. The common values shared by the people of Pakistan and Bangladesh has kept the feelings of brotherhood alive which can go a long way in opening new vistas of co-operation between Pakistan and Bangladesh in the field of commerce, trade and industry.
Pakistan and Bangladesh as members of Organisation of Islamic Conference are already working in close co-operation and have similar views on the problems faced by the Muslim Ummah. Pakistan and Bangladesh has identity of views on many international issues and have expressed their resolve to work together for resolution of these issues. Despite impact of global economic recession Bangladesh has maintained a sustained growth rate of 5% since 1990 providing stability to its economy.
The introduction of microcredit schemes of Grameen Bank by the Nobel laureate Dr Mohammad Yunus is a landmark achievement of Bangladesh to improve and stabilise the economic well being of its poor segment of society which has been acclaimed world over as a positive step in the social sector to help eradicate poverty. Pakistan can benefit with this experience of Bangladesh.
I see a greater economic and political role for Bangladesh in future as an upcoming economic force of the region and look forward to a more meaningful, sustained and long lasting relation between Pakistan and Bangladesh in a wide ranging field of relations. Long live Pakistan and Bangladesh Friendship.
