Addresses by the heads of state or government must never be evaluated on irrelevant yardsticks as is being done about President Asif Ali Zardari's address to the joint sitting of the parliament, by some political and media critics whose argument that there was nothing extraordinary in the presidential address, was not bought by the people.
One fails to understand as to why some of our media persons and Opposition leaders who criticise just for the sake of criticism, are always trying to project things (or government's failure) in an extraordinary way? Can't these leading figures give some breathing space to the people of Pakistan to live- and have expectations- in an ordinary way?
The question that comes to the common man's mind in this specific context is that can't the president or the prime minister be criticised or guided otherwise? And then why do some of our critics feel the necessity of projecting the government's failure by saying that the President didn't come up with anything exceptional particularly when, frankly speaking, there is no likelihood of anything exceptional happening or being done at the government level.
The government is rather expected to take up the challenges and do the business of governance with diligence and on a constant footing without any kind of slackness. And the government of the day is already doing although it is faced with many a bottleneck from different directions.
It is, however, most unfortunate that some critics have failed to notice the positives in Zardari's address to the parliament on the occasion of the commencement of the 4th parliamentary year.
Take, for example, President's emphatic tone in strongly condemning the act of blasphemy on the part of Pastor Terry Jones of the United States. It was so timely and very much in consonance with the feelings of the entire Muslim Ummah.
