Tearaway A-League leaders Brisbane Roar set a new Australian club record of 23 games without defeat after downing Melbourne Heart 2-1 this weekend. The Roar last lost against Melbourne Victory on September 12 and have now overtaken Apia-Leichhardt's previous record set in the former National Soccer League in 1986-87.
Brisbane lead the competition by nine points after goals from Costa Rican striker Jean Carlos Solorzano and local junior James Meyer, with his fourth strike in his last three matches. The Heart, who needed a win to keep alive their top six playoff chances, got their goal from Dutchman Gerald Sibon in the 75th minute.
Argentine Patricio Perez inspired Central Coast Mariners to a crucial 2-1 triumph away to Adelaide United on Saturday. Perez scored a goal and set up another for Joshua Rose to give his second-placed club a four-point buffer from Adelaide in third spot.
Adelaide's reply came with a 91st minute strike from Travis Dodd. Two superb Danny Allsopp goals all but assured Melbourne Victory a finals berth after a 2-0 win over fourth-placed Gold Coast at home on Sunday. Allsopp struck in each half of a match played in soaring temperatures to give fifth-placed Victory a seven-point buffer over seventh-placed Melbourne Heart with two games remaining.
Wellington Phoenix move to sixth spot with a 1-0 home win over the Newcastle Jets on Sunday, the winner coming from Dylan Macallister in the 20th minute after a break on the right from Marco Rojas.
Nick Carle scored his first goal of the season as champions Sydney FC kept their slim finals hopes alive with a 2-0 away victory over Perth Glory on Saturday. Carle, playing just his 14th game of an injury-plagued campaign, scored in the ninth minute and Brazilian Bruno Cazarine added a second after half-time to continue Sydney's late season rally of three wins and two draws from their past five games.
