The price of 50 kg urea bag increased to Rs 1150.75 on January 27, 2011, which is 41.45 percent higher as compared to Rs 813. 92 of the same period of last year, according to official figures. Official figures of weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) inflation released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) on Saturday noted considerable increase in the prices of fertiliser and cement.
Analysis of the data showed highest increase of 46.64 percent in the price of 50 kg bag of T SP Phosphate (GR). The price per bag of T SP Phosphate went up to Rs 2333.33 in January 2011 from Rs 1591.25 in January 2010. This was followed by nitro phosphate where per bag price, after an increase of 42.46 percent, soared to Rs 2047.78 in January 2011 from Rs 1437.44 on January 28, 2010.
The increase in fertiliser prices, analysts say, would result in high cost of agriculture sector inputs and would add to the subsidy, if this price was picked up by the government. The price of 50 kg urea bag Kissan after registering an increase of 30 percent soared to Rs 1043.89 on January 27, 2010 from Rs 798.14 for the same period a year ago. The cost of 50 kg bag of ammonium phosphate increased from Rs 925 on January 28, 2010 to Rs 1150 on January 27, 2011, and diaamon phosphate from Rs 2442 to Rs 3151.
The price of per bag of urea was Rs 1150 in Hyderabad and Quetta, Rs 1120 in Sukkur, Rs 1100 in Faisalabad, Sargodha & Bhawalpur, Rs 1075 in Gujranwala and Rs 1160 in Peshawar. A bag of urea was available at Rs 1050 in Larkana. Similarly, the price of cement increased by 28.66 percent in January 2011 as compared to the same period of last year. The price of per bag cement was Rs 270.38 in January 2010, which increased to Rs 347.88 per bag in January 2011. The retail prices of cement and fertiliser varied from city to city. The price of cement bag, according to data, was Rs 338 in Rawalpindi, Rs 340 in Islamabad, Rs 350 in Lahore, Rs 345 in Multan, Rs 355 in Hyderabad and Rs 405, highest, in Quetta.
