Federal Minister for Women and Development Division Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has said government is committed to empower the women in political, legal, social and economic areas.
This was stated by her here on Thursday in a meeting with an eleven member delegation of UK Commonwealth and Parliamentary Association headed by Roger Gale, which is visiting Pakistan to exchange views on women's development including gender representation legislation and increasing the role of women in the parliament and public life.
She said that the government continues to hold fast to women's empowerment agenda on its principle stance in line with the vision given by the former Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed. The minister said institutionalisation of gender equality and women's empowerment commitment is our priority, however mechanisms of accountability and monitoring are yet to be established in key mainstream ministries and departments. A Federal Ministry of Women Development is required to lead and guide the on-going process and further facilitate implementation of commitments.
She said reservation of 33% seats in the local governments and 17% national and provincial assembly reserved for women has been a landmark achievement. The provision of quotas for female councils and legislators helped in creating acceptability for women having a place in public decision making. The minister said a new law for protection of women against harassment at workplace has been enacted by the government and its implementation is in process. Establishment of National Implementation Watch Committee and 90 Ministries/Divisions/Departments adopting the code of conduct is a huge success of public private partnership to work together for effective implementation.-PR
