Following acts of violence and incidents of intimidation that occurred at KESC offices across Karachi on Thursday, the KESC claimed that it had gathered reports from all its main operational centres that said "rogue" elements from within the unions and unknown outsiders continued to harass, threaten and intimidate KESC officers and staff, a KESC release said Friday.
"These elements have forcibly closed many of our offices, and are preventing KESC workers from doing their jobs. Our officers and staff are being forcibly prevented from attending to consumer complaints, and from performing routine maintenance. Despite requests to the local and provincial governments to provide security and prevent this unlawful behaviour by rogue elements, KESC has received no help or support. In this situation, KESC's management is being forced to curtail and in some areas completely shut down LT and HT operations.
"We have been forced to take this drastic step as a direct consequence of the failure of the State to provide a secure environment for our workers, and the inability of law enforcement agencies to confront rogue elements. The responsibility for any impact on consumers as a result of extended outages rests squarely and solely on the State and the rogue elements creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. "KESC's management and officers will continue to strive to provide adequate service to all our customers, and will not be held hostage by a small minority of violent thugs," the press release concluded.
