EPD arranges workshop on 'climate change policy'

The Punjab Environment Secretary, Sajjad Saleem Hotiana, has said that human interaction with environment has developed need to start individual as well as collaborative efforts to protect life on this planet.
He was addressing the consultation workshop on climate change policy, which was organised by the Environment Protection Department (EPD) Punjab in collaboration with Ministry of Environment and UN Joint Programme for Environment here on Saturday. Park and Horticulture Authority Chairman Abdul Jabbar, EPD Director General Dr Shahgufta Shahjahan, representatives of different government and non-government organisations, professors, environmental lawyers and media also attended the workshop. The workshop was held to discuss newly drafted policy on climate change and environmental issues that confront Pakistan.
The Environment Secretary said that EPD had started introducing solar energy in Punjab. "Moreover, efficient mass transport system is being introduced to reduce reliance of citizens on individual vehicles," he added.
He also gave his brief opinion on climate change policy and discussed the issues pertaining to global warming, drought, melting Glaciers, Floods and tsunami. He advocated for saving resources through adaptation and mitigation to climate change.
On the occasion, EPD Director General Dr Shagufta Shahjahan said the Government of Pakistan has developed a draft policy on climate change at a time when Pakistan is facing challenges posed by climate change. "Though Pakistan is lesser contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, but it will be hit severely due to global warming, resulting in increase in sea level, melting glaciers and change in weather patterns.
