The National Assembly on Thursday was informed that loan of Rs 74.384 billion was written-off by 33 public, private and foreign banks operating in Pakistan during 2008-09.
In response to a question raised by Ms Tasneem Siddiqui, a written reply furnished to the National Assembly by Minister for Finance, Revenue and Planning and Development Abdul Hafeez Sheikh stated that 33 banks had written-off loans during the period that include 11 from public sector, five foreign banks and rest 17 from private sector.
The finance minister told the House that the public sector banks have written off 8.08 billion loans of 24,389 borrowers, foreign banks Rs 29.9 billion of 248,241 borrowers and private banks obliged 454,747 clients by writing off Rs 36.31 billion.
In his reply, Hafeez Sheikh told the House that public sector Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited had written off Rs 3449.09 million, National Bank of Pakistan Rs 3186.61million, SME Bank Limited Rs 679.37million, Industrial Development Bank of Pakistan Rs 525.42 million, Pak Kuwait Investment Co Limited Rs 68.99 million, Saudi Pak Industrial & Agri. Investment Co Rs 65.59 million, The Bank of Punjab Rs 57.59 million, The Bank of Khyber Rs 39.37 million, Pak Libya Holding Company Limited Rs 7.55 million, Pak Oman Investment Co Limited Rs 2.82 million, First Women Bank Limited had written-off Rs 2.46 million.
Among the foreign banks Albaraka Islamic Bank BSC. (E.C) written off Rs 7.61 million, Citibank Rs 8189.90 million, The Royal Bank of Scotland Limited Rs 5247.58 million, Standard Chartered Bank Limited Rs 16053.26 million, HSBC Bank Middle East Limited Rs 486.14 million.
Among private banks the details of written-off loans says that United Bank Limited had written-off loans Rs 12517.49 million, Habib Bank Limited Rs 7167.93 million, NIB Bank Limited Rs 4877.16 million, Allied Bank Limited Rs 3826.28 million, MCB Bank Limited Rs 3622.77 million, Askari Bank Limited Rs 1636.07 million, Bank Alfalah Limited Rs 1031.88 million, Silk Bank Limited Rs 872.37million, MyBank Limited Rs 201.05 million, KASB Bank Limited Rs 158.66 million, Atlas Bank Limited Rs 136.54 million, Habib Metropolitan Bank Limited Rs 100.96 million, Samba Bank Limited Rs 89.88 million, Soneri Bank Limited Rs 40.69 million, Faysal Bank Limited Rs 21.65 million, Bank Al Habib Limited Rs 7.46 million and Meezan Bank Limited had written-off Rs 5.88million.
