Besides providing a sense of security to the citizens, the Islamabad Police is also committed to initiate various welfare projects. This was stated by Kaleem Imam, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Islamabad, here on Tuesday during a Mega Free Eye Camp held here at Bari Imam.
"Islamabad Police is determined to ensure protection to the lives and property of the citizens by fulfilling their responsibilities with zeal and zest," he said. Islamabad City Lions Club developed and managed a Free 'Sight First project' in league with local NGOs, Islamabad City Police, eye care professionals and the custodian of Bari Imam Darbar, Raja Sarfaraz.
More than 500 people were examined in the camp, and people with serious eye problems were referred to Shifa Eye Trust. With a gesture to win the public support and upholding the slogan of friendly policing, the personnel of the force will continue contributing in social welfare activities, IGP added.
He said that Islamabad Police is the role model for other law enforcement agencies, owing to its devotion to the cause of helping the poor in distress. Appreciating the Lions Club, he said that selection of the slum area for free medical camp is really good because 14 villages are positioned with the area and ratio of eye diseases is much higher there, as compared to other areas of Islamabad.
The mission of the camp is to empower communities to save sight through early detection and timely treatment of glaucoma and diabetic eye disease, encourage those at risk to undergo a dilated eye exam, and educate those with low vision and their caregivers about the condition, Kaleem said.
President of City Lions Club, Masood Ghani, said that the purpose of the camp was to build capacities of eye care systems and to provide the high quality, sustainable services to the poor community of Bari Imam and to promote healthy vision and raise awareness of the causes of preventable vision loss. He said that International Lions had launched Campaign Sight First II in 2005.
