Pakistan Bar Council elections today

Published Updated

Elections of Pakistan Bar Council will held on today and seventy-five voters will decide the fate of 30 candidates for 11 seats from Punjab. Every candidate is trying hard to take sympathies of the voters and most of the voters already had given commitment to their favourite candidates.
The elections in Punjab would held in the office of Punjab Advocate General, who is presiding officer for the election here in Lahore. The voting would continue from 9 AM to 3 PM. Unofficial result would be announced the same day, however official notification would be issued on December 31.
Hamid Khan, Muhammad Ahsan Bhoon, Ramazan Chaudhry, Azam Nazir Tarar and Syed Qalb-e-Hassan, will be elected as they have evident support of required 6 voters. Maqsood Buttar, Mian Abbas and Mian Israr, Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Rana Mashhood and Khurram Latif Khosa would also win the elections as they have more voters than rest of the candidates. However there would be a close contest among Shahram Sarwar, Burhan Muazzam Malik, Mian Quddoos, and Nasrullah Warraich for one remaining seat.
The 22 seats of the PBC are divided among the provinces as: Punjab 11 seats, Khyber Pakhtunkhawa 4, Sindh 6, and Balochistan 1 seat. For contesting election of the PBC, a candidate must have membership of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
Ashraf Wahla is contesting election at the fifth time, Hamid Khan is contesting at fourth time, and Asrarul Haq Mian is contesting at second time. Senior bar members have termed it an undemocratic act and demanded that there should be a limit over repeating elections again and again.
Among the other contestants are Anwar Akhtar, Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf Wahlah, Mian Muhammad Shafiq, Chaudhry M Khalid Farooq, Muhammad Arif Alvi, Rana Zia Abdul Rehman, Farrukh Mahmood, Sardar Manzoor Ahmad Khan, Muhammad Kalim Ahmad Khurshid, Syed Asghar Hussain Sabzwari, Abdul Aziz Khan Niazi, Tanveer-ur-Rehman Randhawa, Malik Khalid Mahmood, Mahmood Ashraf Khan, Muhammad Sher Cheena, and Muhammad Maqsood Ahmad. Barrister Nasir Sabir Chaudhry and Chaudhry Muhammad Amin Javed have already withdrawn their nomination papers.
