Pakistan witnesses total lunar eclipse
KARACHI: The heavens gifted a rare event at the end of 2011 when Pakistan witnessed a total lunar eclipse as the earth moved between the moon and the sun on Saturday.
The moon noticeably darkened and reflected different colours as the earth blocked the sun’s rays, refracting light through its own atmosphere.
Partial lunar eclipses are common, but total ones are rare.
The eclipse could be seen in most parts of the world unlike a solar eclipse, which can only be seen from a small part of the world at a time.
One doesn’t need to wear any protective equipment or even view it through a telescope. It can be seen with the naked eye.
The whole process will take about three and half hours when the earth completely eclipses the moon. It is expected to end by 10:30pm.
The next total lunar eclipse is expected in April 2014.
