German footballer banned for match-fixing scam

German footballer Marcel Schuon has been banned for nearly three years for his involvement in a match-fixing scam, the German football federation (DFB) announced on Monday. Schuon, a defender with second division club SV Sandhausen, was suspended for "unsporting behaviour" for two years and nine months, retroactive to December 1, 2009, the date he was expelled by his club.
The 25-year-old was accused of approaching the owner of a betting shop offering to influence the outcome of three matches in 2008 and 2009. Schuon, who had big gambling debts, admitted the accusations, the DBF said.
