KARACHI: Wheat Traders Association of Pakistan (WTAP) has urged the government to withdraw the recently announced support price for wheat as it will increase the export cost for Pakistani wheat in the international market.
Secretary WTAP Saleem Ahmed said here Monday that the current export price of Pakistani wheat comes to $ 305 per metric ton FOB Karachi.
He pointed out that India and Black Sea prices consisting of Russian/Ukraine origin are ranging between $ 240 to $ 260 per MT which has made the Pakistani export not only difficult but nearly impossible in world's markets.
Saleem said that wheat exporters have built-up export markets for Pakistan in the recent past with sheer hard work. This will be lost to our competitors, he noted.
He said that WTAP has requested the government to seriously look at ways to decrease the input cost to farmers so that wheat can be produced and exported at competitive prices as both our farmers and exporters have a tremendous potential of producing bumper wheat crops.
He observed that this will also ensure affordable prices to our countrymen.
