KARACHI: The setting up of emergency units and air- ambulance service could help lessen the number of casualties on highways in the country, said Chairman standing committee on communication for FPCCI Noman Saigol.
Referring to various tragic road accidents in which dozens of people lost their lives not only on highways in Sindh but other provinces, he said in his proposals on Sunday that prompt action by the police and emergency unit officials could help deliver first aid to the commuters.
"In most of the cases, the victims remain at the mercy of the villagers who themselves have no mode of communication except the mobile phones, however, they also lack awareness to deal with such situations," he pointed out.
He said there is also need to publicise the emergency numbers at grass root levels through print and electronic media to help people memorise these numbers and call the police or emergency units when needed.
Saigol also suggested that there was also need for installation of telephone booths for emergency purposes only on every 2 to 3 kms distance so that the victims or any volunteer could make a SOS call.
At the same time the government in collaboration with any NGO could also establish the much needed trauma centres with a capacity of 20 to 30 beds each to face any eventuality and provide first aid till the accident victims are provided formal relief.
"A 24-service with required emergency staff and equipment could prove to be very important to rescue the injured who could not reach major hospitals due to various reasons," he added.
