Romania sells 502m lei in 9-month

Published Updated

poiuBUCHAREST: Romania sold 502 million lei ($155.5 million) in nine-month treasury bills on Monday, half the planned amount, with the average accepted yield at 6.72 percent, virtually unchanged from a previous tender on Sept. 19, central bank data showed.

The finance ministry has been struggling to sell debt at acceptable costs since August on euro zone concerns and tighter liquidity on the local market. Yields fell briefly earlier this month after Romania's central bank unexpectedly cut interest rates by a quarter-point to 6 percent.

Debt managers had planned to sell 1 billion lei.

So far this year, Romania has sold just under 47 billion lei in bonds and bills on the domestic market. It also sold 1.5 billion euros in five-year bonds on foreign markets and was planning to tap US markets for a second issue this year.

But the finance ministry said last week it will wait to issue a planned dollar bond until market conditions improve.
