A division bench of the Supreme Court while fining Rs 5 million to Alamgir Tower, owners ordered to fill six basements of the tower, as they had constructed nine basements after getting approval for only three and directed to act upon the court orders within two weeks.
The bench, comprising Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday and Justice Falak Sher issued these orders in some identical petitions challenging the illegal construction of high-rise buildings in the city and adjourned the proceedings to August 08.
On July 30, the SC bench issued notices to the owners of 13 plazas in the city which were in sheer violation of building bylaws according to a report of local commission, appointed by the court.
The Commission was comprised of former justice Riaz Kiyani as its Chairman, an expert in the field of structure engineer nominated by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore and a renowned architect Kamil Khan Mumtaz as its members.
The Commission was assigned with the task of inspecting all such high-rise buildings and to submit reports with respect to each such buildings regarding their structure stability, regarding the impact on the government caused by them and also to find out whether such-like buildings were being constructed in conformity with all the laws and regulations governing the subject.
Justice Ramday directing Director General LDA, not bring into process the sanction application, which they had submitted before the LDA seeking their construction be declared as legal, to make such buildings according to the law or we should be compelled to hang everyone upside down in case of any violation.
