The rupee extended its overnight gains against dollar in the interbank market on Wednesday as it picked up four paisa for buying at Rs 60.53 and rose by five paisa for selling at Rs 60.54, dealers said. High inflows of dollars enabled the rupee to retain its gain, picked up nearly seven to eight paisa since the week started, dealers said.
Currency analysts said that strong remittances, upward trend in the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and rising pattern in the foreign exchange reserves are the factors, strengthening the rupee against dollar. Some bankers said that despite the continued dollar buying by the importers, different local and foreign banks were selling approximately 50 million dollars on daily basis to meet the clients demand.
In the international markets, yen rose broadly on Wednesday and high yield providers dipped as worries about the US sub-prime mortgage sector dimmed appetite for the carry trade.
OPEN MARKET RATES: Easier trend was seen in the open market as the rupee was down by three paisa against dollar for buying and selling at Rs 61.18 and Rs 61.25, dealers said. The rupee, however, gained nine paisa in relation to the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 81.87 and Rs 82.00, they said.
