murad-ali-shah0KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has decided to overhaul education system in the province.

While presiding over a meeting to review the performance of the Education Department, he stressed the need for improving teachers' skills, making education totally free, developing quality curriculum and for offering scholarships to girl students, said a press release issued here on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by Education Minister Jam Mehtab Dahar, Chief Secretary Rizwan Mmon, Secretary Education Aziz Uqaili, Additional Secretary Education Nawaz Sohu, Abdul Wahab Soomro and other concerned officers.

Secretary Education Aziz Uqaili, briefing the chief minister, said that there were 11,474 schools functioning without toilets, 13,016 without drinking water, 1,116 without boundary walls and 13,158 without electricity.

On this the chief minister directed that serious measures be taken to address these issues.

"If we succeed in developing our good education system by inducting well-trained teachers, introducing decent curriculum, we would be able to eliminate terrorism, crime and other evils from the society," he said.

He directed the Education Minister to personally visit districts and start constructing toilets and water tanks, including for drinking purposes, on war footings.

The Minister Education informed that he made personal efforts for the re-opening of 1,759 schools in the province where 55,816 children have been enrolled so far.

The chief minister also directed the Education Minister to hold a review meeting of curriculum being taught in government schools in all the classes.

The chief minister also proposed to make education in public sector totally free. On this the Chief Secretary said that the education is free, but the chief minister said that the students pay their examination fee which also needed to be paid by the government.

He directed the Education Department to work out the proposal in detail by collecting examination board-wise data of the students who appear in examinations.

The chief minister also decided to give scholarships to over 300,000 girl students all over Sindh at a rate of Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 3,500 per month.
