Afghan batsman overtakes Kohli, Akmal in T20Is

Published March 13, 2017 Updated March 13, 2017 11:03am

imageTeam Afghanistan has been on a roll recently as they trumped Ireland in the recently concluded series, beating the giant slayers by 28 runs in the last match to seal a 3-0 whitewash, and with that taking their unbeaten streak to a record 11 games in T20Is.

Afghanistans wicketkeeper and opening batsman Mohammad Shahzad, has been a pivotal member of his side and its rise in the T20I circuit.

Regarded as one of the most destructive batsmen in the game today, Shahzad has surpassed the likes of Indias batting maestro Virat Kohli and Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal to become the fourth highest run scorer in T20 cricket.

Shahzad, with 1779 runs in 58 matches including 12 half centuries and with the best of 118, is one of the few batsmen who have reached the three figures in the games shortest format.

Former New Zealand batsman Brendon McCullum sits at the top with 2140 runs in 71 matches. Whereas, Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan and New Zealand opener Martin Guptill are seated at second and third spot with 1889 and 1806 runs, respectively.

Shahzad was recently included in the Indian Premier League (IPL) draft held recently. The opening batsman, however, was not picked up by any team.
