imageBRUSSELS: The European Commission on Tuesday cleared a 420 million euros ($443.73 million) Czech support scheme for combined heat and power plants, which it said would lead to higher levels of environmental protection.

The Commission, which acts as the competition watchdog in the European Union, said the measure would support EU energy and climate change goals without unduly distorting competition.

The Czech programme pays a fixed premium on top of the electricity market price to operators of high-efficiency combined heat and power plants commissioned between January 2016 and December 2020.
