Donald Trump became the 45th president of United States much to the dismay of minorities living in the country. Muslims in particular were shocked over the rise of Trump to the post of Commander in Chief of the US.
Many US citizen of Islamic faith were of the view that Trump with his Muslim banning stance would be a nightmare for them, but his presidency is not even started yet, one may question.
However, the stats support the former statement after it was learnt that hate crimes against Muslims rose significantly in 2015 up by 67 percent to their highest number since the aftermath of the Sept 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) statistics released, reported Associated Press.
There were 257 incident of hate against Muslims in the US compared to 154 reported in 2014.
“I wasn’t surprised to learn that anti-Muslim hate crime statistics spiked in 2015,” said Jordan Denari Duffner, research fellow at The Bridge Initiative, a research project on Islamophobia at Georgetown University.
“The official FBI statistics confirmed what many of us predicted – that anti-Muslim acts, many of them violent, were on the rise,” he added.
Overall hate crimes in US grew by 6.8pc to a total of 5,850 incidents throughout the year. While crimes against Muslims grew by the highest amount, the incidents of hate against Jewish, black and LGBTQ people all increased as well last year.
