CARACAS: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was to return home on Thursday, officials said, after a visit to Cuba for medical exams in the wake of multiple rounds of chemotherapy to fight his cancer.
The ailing leftist leader was to attend a event in the western state of Tachira, where he is expected speak in public, Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez told state VTV late Wednesday.
There were no indications of Chavez's health status after the medical examinations in close ally Cuba, where Chavez has been since Sunday.
Chavez had previously said he would have a checkup in Cuba to confirm there are no malignant cells remaining in his body, and he vowed to inform the Venezuelan people of the results of the "rigorous" tests when he returned.
The 57-year-old president said before he left that he would be in constant contact with his vice president, ministers and top military brass during his stay in Havana.
Chavez has undergone four rounds of chemotherapy since an operation in June, three of them in Cuba, but little information has been provided about the nature of the cancer, raising uncertainties about the state of his health.
Chavez, in power since 1999, has maintained that he will recover in time to win reelection in 2012.
