Ministry of Information Technology has prepared a draft policy framework to operate the Universal Service Fund (USF). The USF is being set up in the ministry to promote telecom services in the un-served and undeserved areas, said Minister for Information Technology, Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari here on Saturday.
He said the policy framework draft has also been placed at the website of the Ministry - www.moit.gov.pk to elicit views and suggestions from the stakeholders.
"We want to make sure that the policy framework should be a compact document and be finalised in consultation with the industry and all stakeholders," Awais said in a statement.
He said the government was committed to promote telecommunication services in the country and the USF would finance the spread of network coverage and service to previously un-served or undeserved areas besides making it possible for operators to supply individual service on normal commercial terms in areas, which are covered through the USF.
The minister noted that access to telecommunication services was still not available to 60 percent of the population and the primary goal of the USF was to ensure availability and coverage of voice telephony and data services suitable for internet access, to progressively greater proportions of the Pakistan population at their home locations.
